Our Story

We found out we were pregnant with Ava on New Years Eve, 2018. The pregnancy gave us so much to celebrate heading into the new year. We were so excited and so hopeful at everything to come.

Everything in all of our ultrasounds was great, she was always healthy — until our 20 week anatomy scan, when we got the devastating news that Ava had bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys. Her kidneys didn’t work, there was not amniotic fluid, her lungs would never develop, and she would not survive.

Through second opinions, and all the dark days that followed, we held on to hope that our baby girl would survive. As we continued to get devastating news, and heard our options, we knew that the most important thing to us was our baby. We wanted as much time with her as possible, and we wanted to make sure that what life she did live was comfortable and happy.

Ava was born via c section on August 7, 2019. We were told she would likely only live minutes, but she lived for two beautiful hours. This was a miracle in itself. She only knew love and light. She passed away in her mommy’s arms. She got to meet her family. She didn’t know pain or heartache, all she knew was love. It was the most beautiful and most devastating day of our lives.

We continue to tell her story, and hope that her life can help others. It has been our mission to continue to give her a voice. Through faith, Ava still speaks.

Paying it Forward

Abel Speaks walked through the darkest and most painful moments of our life with us.

They offered us hope, reassurances in our decisions, and made an isolating experience feel less lonely. They gave us support and love when it felt like not many others could. They gave us community and support. They loved us and our sweet girl unconditionally through everything, and we are forever grateful to have them in our corner.

A donation in Ava’s honor would help her voice still be heard. It will help other families to have the community and support that we have. Through Ava, other families would have hope, love, support and community that is so desperately needed.

With love,

Marybeth & Jacob Lobato
