Our Story

In 2015, we had our first daughter, Adleigh, and a short eighteen months later, we had our first son, Ryker. Both pregnancies were healthy and smooth.

In 2018, we lost our daughter Radiance at 21 weeks due to a placenta issue. She lived for about an hour and a half. This experience was shocking, unexpected and devastating.

Fast forward to 2019, I became pregnant with our rainbow baby, Caleb. My pregnancy with him was a roller coaster of good news and bad news. As his birth approached, the doctors said he may have a small Gastrointestinal blockage, but reassured us it was an easy, one-time fix with the outcome being a long, healthy life.

About 12 hours after his birth, Caleb struggled with his oxygen levels, which began our 27 days of fighting for his life. Caleb’s issues included two GI blockages (which he had two surgeries to fix), a heart defect, urinary problems, and low oxygen levels. As the doctors worked tirelessly to solve the mystery of Caleb’s struggles, he continued to deteriorate. On day 21, Caleb was placed on ECMO, also known has a heart and lung machine or life support. Caleb’s 4th genetic test revealed a gene deletion. This specific, deleted gene is connected to a rare lung disease called Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia with Misalignment of Pulmonary. He could not oxygenate his own blood. The day after we found out these results, Caleb died.

This was the most difficult day of my life. My greatest fear as a parent coming true as my son slowly died in my arms.

And yet I knew it was time for Caleb to be done here on earth. He fought so hard not knowing he had a fatal lung disease. He gave us all he could and I’m forever grateful for the time we had together. In those last moments, I tried to live a lifetime with him. I told him how proud I was of him and that I would forever love him, miss him, and speak of him.

Paying it Forward

In honor of Caleb’s 5th birthday, we would be so encouraged by your support. People’s donations to Abel Speaks would remind us that Caleb’s life still matters, he is remembered, and his legacy carries on. Your donation, in honor of Caleb’s life, will uplift other families who are experiencing the heartbreak of losing a child. As Caleb’s parents, we find great joy and healing in knowing that our son’s life could help other families in similar situations.

With love,

Cassie & Geoff Carrigan
