Our Story

When we found out we were expecting our first daughter, Felicity Carol, we were overjoyed. We were simply shocked when we left our 20-week anatomy scan and discovered that there were some concerns with Felicity’s heart. Unfortunately, after that appointment there were constant doctor visits in which it seemed like we continued to receive worse and worse news about the likelihood of successful surgery on Felicity’s heart due to multiple complex issues with her kidneys, lungs, jaw, and fluid in her body called “hydrops fetalis,” which is most often fatal. We prepared for a long Cardiac ICU and NICU stay and spent multiple days each week at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital’s fetal care center praying, researching, and asking countless questions about how we could best steward our daughter’s life and care for her. The first week of February 2024, Lily began to feel Felicity move less, probably due to all the fluid in her body. Unfortunately, due to all of Felicity’s complexities and her small size, there was not much doctors could do besides monitor everything.

We had just connected with Abel Speaks when, on February 9th at 28 weeks pregnant, we learned that Felicity had died. Her delivery was heartbreaking, but there was also a supernatural peace present in holding her precious body and knowing she was healed in the arms of Jesus—memories we both never want to forget. We felt intense grief and emptiness after Felicity passed away, but we are so thankful for our community that took care of us. We saw the love of God’s people during this time. Abel Speaks rushed resources and memory-making keepsakes to us, our church fed us dinners for over a month, and our family supported us and helped us plan a beautiful celebration of life for Felicity.

Felicity Carol’s name means “joyful song.” She taught us so much about how precious life is; to truly surrender and depend on the Lord while walking through the unknown; to love deeper, and so much more. It is an honor to be her parents.

Paying it Forward

It’s hard to believe it’s been one year. Even though we only met with Abel Speaks a few days before Felicity passed away, the conversations with them helped us know our preferences for Felicity’s birth, memory making, and ways to spend the time we had to hold our daughter. Their keepsakes and resources helped us celebrate Felicity’s life and honor her at her service and continue to bring comfort every day. Finally, the retreat we went to in Branson encouraged our faith and gave us a beautiful and safe place to continue to process our grief and also have fun while connecting with other couples. We never want another parent to walk this journey of a child with a life-limiting diagnosis alone, and supporting Abel Speaks is a way to make that happen.

By faith, Felicity Branham still speaks!
