Our Story
1 in 4,500 pregnancies. We were the 1.
On May 20th, 2024, we received the devastating news that something was wrong with our baby boy. Just three days later, on May 23rd, we were given a life-limiting diagnosis: bilateral renal agenesis, a rare genetic condition where a baby’s kidneys do not develop during pregnancy.
Even after hearing those words, we were left with so many questions. We were told—gently—that our baby would not be coming home with us. If he was alive inside Laci’s womb, we decided we would give him the fullest, most love-filled life possible for as long as we could. And we did. Kohen’s life was filled with hammock swings, dancing, baseball games, Legos, and summer swims.
Kohen Jay surprised us all by arriving early at 32 weeks. On August 11th, he entered the world with the sweetest cry and a head full of auburn hair. We were blessed with three unforgettable, life-changing hours with our son. His big sister beamed with pride, showering him with hugs and kisses, instinctively knowing it was her role to love and care for her little brother. He was wrapped in the love not only of his mom and dad and big sister, but also his grandparents, his auntie, and four incredible friends who mean the world to us.Kohen’s time here was perfect in its own way—surrounded by warmth, joy, and the sound of songs we sang just for him. Laci shared her mother-son dance with him, and together we soaked in every detail of our beautiful boy.
At 1:15 a.m. on August 12th, Kohen went to be with Jesus, hearing his favorite song, The Blessing by Kari Jobe. What a blessing he will forever be. It is the greatest honor to be the parents of such a perfect little boy.
Thank you for being part of Team Kohen. We love you.
Paying it Forward
Abel Speaks helped us with formulating the right questions to ask doctors, gave us advice on how to advocate for our family, connected us with other families who we have been fortunate enough to meet up with and gave us life long bonds with those who are walking this same road. They have provided us with memorabilia that will help us keep Kohen’s name alive for the rest of our lives. We want to support Abel Speaks by raising money for them so families who are unfortunately walking this same road don’t have to walk it alone.
With love,
Kyle, Laci, and Kollins
