Our Story
Our son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus when I was 22 weeks pregnant.
From what we knew and were told, with the amount of fluid our baby had, we were categorized as a “severe case.” Our doctor explained what he could with the information he had and told us that our baby would most likely be special needs, but that in four weeks, we’d have a follow-up and a better prognosis. Four weeks later, the fluid in Liam’s head had doubled, and then some.
With how much fluid had built up in such a short time, Liam’s prognosis went from special needs to what doctors believed would be that he would not live more than ten weeks after birth. With that information, and what Liam’s life could look like, along with heavy prayer, we decided that when Liam was born, we would keep him without pain or discomfort and allow him to decide when he was ready to be in heaven with God. As my pregnancy continued, the fluid did as well. Each time we left the hospital, we felt more and more defeated. We were celebrating the life we had been blessed with, all while grieving what was to come.
Towards the end of my pregnancy, we had scheduled a medically necessary cesarean but were faced with the decision of whether we would drain some of the fluid in Liam’s head to alleviate some of the health risks that were being placed on me. Accepting that there was a risk of losing Liam to the procedure, we decided to proceed with having it done. After the procedure was done, we had a mix of emotions. It was our last appointment with our MFM, which meant my pregnancy had come to an end. But then, we were excited that we were a week away from meeting Liam.
As the hours passed after the procedure, I stopped feeling fetal movement and knew in my heart that Liam was in heaven. Liam was born on March 28th, exactly one week after his sister’s second birthday. We were sad and heartbroken, but that still didn’t rob us of the joy we felt when meeting Liam for the first time. While we still wish we could have heard Liam’s cry, we know that Liam is healed, and he is with God. We know and trust that one day, we’ll be reunited again. We wish we could have had a lifetime with him, but we know that God promises us an eternity in heaven.
Paying it Forward
We absolutely wish life could be different, but we love sharing Liam’s story and sharing what Abel Speaks has done for us. We connected with them shortly after his diagnosis, and they quickly helped us change the trajectory of our grief, and we are thankful for that every day. Abel Speaks has taught us how to share deeply and openly. They have provided comfort in the hardest season of life, and since losing Liam, we have decided to work with them as mentors and help families going through the same path.
We know the impact that Abel Speaks can have, and having our family and friends donate to Abel Speaks on behalf of Liam’s life gives us the comfort that not only is he being thought of, but a new family is as well. Knowing that the donations being made allow Abel Speaks to continue to serve new families and turn their mourning into joyful dancing, as they did for us, brings us so much peace.
By faith, Liam still speaks!
With love,
Scott and Vanessa Bakker
