Our Story
A few weeks after we packed up and moved from Huntington Beach, CA to start a new life in Omaha, NE, we found out we were pregnant on the last day of 2020. We were nervous starting a family far away from everyone we knew, but our fears went away when we found out we were having a baby girl, who we named Reagan Faye. We loved her the moment we saw that positive test.
At our 20 week anatomy scan, after a long wait and talking about how excited we were and telling the ultrasound tech about our plans to do a baby shower back in California, a doctor came in and told us something was very wrong with her head. Our smiles slowly faded and tears began to fall as he explained that they would do more testing and scans, but ended with, “I just don’t think you’re going to get a kid out of this.” Over the next couple of weeks, Reagan was given a fatal diagnosis of Exencephaly, meaning her skull did not close properly and her brain was forming outside of it. We were told she would likely not make it to birth, but if she did, she would die minutes after. Our hearts and dreams for Reagan were shattered.
On top of being heartbroken, we felt completely alone. We didn’t know anyone who could relate to us, and as we googled “exencephaly” online, it was so rare that we came up empty handed looking for support. In a desperate attempt to find someone who understood, we searched #lifelimitingdiagnosis on instagram. The very first result that popped up was a post from Abel Speaks. We immediately went to their website and sent them our contact info. Shortly after, we were contacted by their team and set up a Zoom call with Daniel and Kelly Crawford. They shared their experience about their son Abel and allowed us to share Reagan’s story so far. For the first time since our world was turned upside down, we didn’t feel alone.
Reagan Faye Kozloff was born at 39 weeks on September 7, 2021. We held our breath, as we waited for the doctor to tell us she was gone, when we heard the loudest, most beautiful cry in the world. Reagan made her presence very known. We got to spend just over 3 days with her – getting to know her, love her, and make memories with her. We got to rock her and sing to her and pray with her. Family and friends flew in from around the country and got to meet her. After we were approved to take her outside for a walk in the hospital garden, we returned to our room and Reagan very quietly and peacefully passed away in her daddy’s arms. If we could go back in time, we would do it all over again. She was worth every second, and we will forever cherish every precious moment we were given with her.
After she had passed, we were told that the NICU doctor had recognized some deformities she had as a condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome, which is extremely rare, and the way it affected Reagan’s head and caused the Exencephaly, was a one in a million chance.
Abel Speaks walked through our heartbreak with us. They were in contact with us the day Reagan was born, as well as the day she died. They sent us the most special keepsakes to remember her by. They continued to check in with us on the days that were hard. They sent us books to help with the grieving process, and they set us up with a mentor couple. Every birthday that passes, more people forget about Reagan, but Abel Speaks always reaches out and sends a card in the mail. They remember us on Mother’s and Father’s Day. Last year, they sent our family (which had grown by one) on a retreat with other families who had been given a life-limiting diagnosis for their child. That trip was so sweet for our hurting souls and so healing for our broken hearts.
To be acknowledged as Reagan’s parents and to hear and see our daughter’s name everywhere has been a priceless gift. Abel Speaks has truly been the hands and feet of Jesus as they continue to walk by our side after the most heart breaking experience that any parent can go through.
Paying it Forward
All of the support we’ve received and continue to receive, even leading up to Reagan’s 3rd birthday, has come at no cost to us. We continue to be amazed at all of the personal and heartfelt ways they have carried us through our loss of Reagan.
In honor of Reagan’s birthday, we would like to invite our friends and family to consider donating to Abel Speaks so that they can continue to bless other families like ours, who desperately need support and community through the most difficult time of their lives.
Abel Speaks changed our story through support, and we want to see other stories changed like ours.
By faith, Reagan still speaks!
With love,
Rachel & Micah Kozloff
