Our Story
Three years ago we were in Boston for what would be the saddest and happiest days of our lives. Theo’s pregnancy had been relatively uneventful for the majority of the time. But at the 31 week mark, we hit a whirlwind of complications that would ultimately end up with us leaving the safety and comfort of our family and friends in Oklahoma to travel northeast to Boston to receive the highest quality of care for our son. Theo experienced what is called an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) of the brain. Because of the severity of his condition, there was nothing that doctors were able to do to solve the problem.
We had a beautiful 56 hours with Theo where he was able to meet both sets of grandparents and spend lots of time with his Mommy and Daddy being bathed, changed, and read to. Brian Owen of Grace City Church was with us to pray over and baptize Theo on his first day of life. Justin read “A Liturgy to Stir Courage in a Child Facing Death” from Volume II of Every Moment Holy, a prayer that we revisit every year on Theo’s memorial. Finally, Aubrey held Theo as all three of us sat together on an outdoor patio area at Boston Children’s Hospital overlooking the city sunset. With the sun shining on his beautiful face, Theo passed from this life surrounded by the love and care of his parents, siblings, family, and friends.
Paying it Forward
Theo’s time with us, though brief, was a beautiful gift, and his legacy of love and joy continues to shape us today. We see God’s hand in every part of Theo’s story and are thankful that we were able to play a part. We love sharing his story because, in a way, it keeps his memory closer to us and gives our friends and family a chance to know more about the boy that forever changed our lives. He is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure, and not a day goes by that we don’t long for him to be here with us.
Abel Speaks’ commitment to excellence in an area of such immense grief and sadness is incredible. They believe strongly that support changes stories and because of that, they are dedicated to providing an amazing level of care, support, and guidance for families going through the hardest moments of their lives. But that high-level of support doesn’t come without cost. So we would love it if you would partner with us to make a financial donation in memory of Theo to Abel Speaks.
A total of donations up to $1,000 will be matched. For every $50 that is donated to Abel Speaks, we will send you a copy of Three Days with Little Theo, a children’s book written and illustrated by Justin’s parents, DJ and Lori, in memory of their first grandchild. For every $100 that is donated, we will send you 2 copies as well as donate a 3rd copy to a local library. It brings us comfort to know that, through Theo’s story, others can receive the same love and encouragement that made such a difference in our lives. Thank you for honoring Theo’s memory in this meaningful way.
With love,
The Riners
